The 2018 State Nominating Convention of the Michigan Democratic Party will be held at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center in East Lansing on Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26. It is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 25, and from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Aug. 26.
The purpose of the convention shall be to adopt the two-year platform, resolutions, and to nominate candidates for the offices of lieutenant governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state Supreme Court, state Board of Education, and the governing boards for the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and Wayne State University.
Although the MDP endorsed candidates for secretary of state, attorney general and Supreme Court at the Endorsement Convention in April, the formal nominations for the November general election will take place at this Nominating Convention.
A delegate to the State Nominating Convention must be an MDP member for at least 30 days prior, or by July 26. Democratic elected officials, including precinct delegates, and Democratic nominees to partisan office are exempt from the 30-day advance membership requirements, but must join or renew on or before the convention date.
(Please note: Precinct delegates elected Aug. 7 may have received a letter from the Jackson County Clerk’s Office indicating that delegates and alternates to the state convention were to be chosen at the Aug. 11 county convention. This is not accurate. Any Michigan Democratic Party member meeting the membership requirements outlined above may participate and vote at the state convention.)
